Congressman Thompson to support #Coronavirus relief bill | Mississippi Politics and News

Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson (D-MS2) today announced his support for the U.S. Senate’s Coronavirus Response Bill.

“America has a moral obligation to care and protect our citizens. I am committed to the health and well-being of my constituents,” Thompson said in a statement.  “Therefore, I will support this legislation when it comes to the House. This legislation will make a large investment in hospitals, health systems, and state and local governments; implement  unemployment insurance benefits; give relief for small businesses; and provide emergency education funding and eliminated income tax on student loan repayment assistance by an employer. I will continue working tirelessly to make sure families and workers are protected.”

Mississippi’s three Republican Congressman have not indicated whether they will vote in favor of the $2 trillion relief package yet but have been critical of their chamber’s leadership in how it has been handled.

Congressman Michael Guest (R-MS3) took to Twitter Monday as negotiations stalled between the Senate and House following Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s insistence on adding her caucus agenda measures to the bill, saying, “A national emergency is not a tool for Democrats to force through their progressive policies. Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and the Democratic Party need to set aside their political agenda and instead focus on combatting this crisis and helping Americans.”

Congressman Steven Palazzo (R-MS4) also expressed his discontent with Democrat leaders in Congress, writing on Twitter, “Our nation and political leaders need to come together and do what’s right. Democrats are choosing to exploit this crisis & snub the needs of our citizens by littering their coronavirus stimulus package with liberal policies that do nothing to address the real issues at hand.”
